India Johnson, a graduate student-athlete at University of Colorado at Boulder and a cross country All-American at Michigan State after placing 35th at the Division 1 championship meet March 15 and helping the Spartans finish fourth in Stillwater, Okla., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Buffaloes sweeping both women's and men's team titles Oct. 29 at the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with preparing for the Mountain Regional meet Nov. 12 at Timpanogos Golf Club in Provo. Johnson finished fourth in her Pac-12 championship debut after also placing fourth in her final Big Ten cross country competition in January in Indiana, also helping Michigan State capture the team title. She reveals her uncertainty about where she was going to attend graduate school after earning her degree in apparel and textile design, but once she learned about the Atlas Institute in Colorado during the summer, Johnson knew it was the ideal location for her to pursue her Masters degree in creative technology and design. Johnson explains her passion project of India Nicole Designs, and how her creativity when it comes to fashion and style has led to her desire to become an entrepreneur in the industry. She also shares how meaningful the collaboration has been thus far with both her professors and fellow students in the Atlas Institute, in addition to how supportive they have been of her traveling to compete for the university. Johnson analyzes how significant it is to have three former Ohio prep standouts in Abby Nichols and Micaela DeGenero, who all previously attended different Big Ten programs with Nichols at Ohio State and DeGenero at Michigan, all on the Colorado roster and contributing to the Buffaloes' success. She examines the impact of true freshman Hannah Miniutti in the Colorado lineup and how her energy has meshed well with the veteran wisdom and experience in the Colorado lineup, including Emily Covert, Rachel McArthur, Maddie Boreman, Lizzy Constien and Kaitlyn Barthell, along with Nichols and DeGenero. Johnson shares how significant the opportunity is to potentially place on the podium at the Division 1 final twice in the same year with multiple programs and how she hopes her experience with Michigan State in March can benefit Colorado in its pursuit for a national team title Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. She also talks about how much she has learned from Colorado coaches Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs, in addition to how meaningful the support has been from the entire program.
