Colorado fifth-year senior Rachel McArthur, a four-time NCAA Division 1 cross country national finalist in addition to being an indoor track All-American during her tenure at Villanova, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Buffaloes sweeping the Pac-12 team titles for the first time since 2016 with their victories Oct. 29 at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City. McArthur finished fifth to help Colorado place four athletes in the top five, along with five scorers among the first 12 finishers. She became the only competitor in the conference to finish in the top five in Utah, as well as at the March 5 conference final in Washington. McArthur also looks ahead to the Mountain Regional meet Nov. 12 at Timpanogos Golf Club in Provo, and the Buffaloes trying to secure their first regional crown since 2017, competing against host Brigham Young and New Mexico. She examines the impact that former Big Ten standouts Abby Nichols of Ohio State, India Johnson of Michigan State and Micaela DeGenero of Michigan have had on the Colorado program since their arrival, in addition to the contributions of freshman Hannah Miniutti. McArthur shares how well the group has connected despite their different backgrounds and unique journeys, and how strong their chemistry is entering the postseason. She explains how much Colorado learned from its seventh-place finish March 15 at the Division 1 championship meet in Stillwater, Okla., and how motivated the Buffaloes were to return to the Oklahoma State course Sept. 18 for the Cowboy Jamboree. McArthur also reflects on racing twice this year at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and how much that will help in Colorado's preparation for the NCAA final Nov. 20 on the same 6-kilometer layout. She analyzes the Buffaloes' performance Oct. 15 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, placing five scorers in the top 25, and their motivation to be an even stronger lineup when they return for the Division 1 championship meet. McArthur shares how meaningful it will be to join the rare group of student-athletes who will be competing in a fifth cross country national final after the NCAA granted extra eligibility as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and her desire to earn All-America honors for the first time to help Colorado capture its first national title since 2018. She also speaks about her academic pursuits in speech, language and hearing with an emphasis on speech pathology, as well as adding a minor in business this year. McArthur also talks about the new Name, Image and Likeness opportunities being presented to student-athletes and how she hopes to become a stronger ambassador for women in running and the sport in general at the collegiate level.
