Gasping for breath midway through the 2006 Pac-10 Championships, junior Yosef Ghebray collapsed and did not complete the race.
His struggles were symbolic of the day the Cal cross country team had last year. “I had gotten sick, and I tried to keep running but my lungs wouldn’t allow me to take deep breaths,” Ghebray said. While Ghebray’s complications might have given him a legitimate reason to run poorly in the race, the rest of the team did not have a similar excuse.
